Nelson Mandela's Grandson Accused of Raping a 15-Year-Old Girl in Restaurant Restroom
One of Nelson Mandela's grandsons is being charged in a South African court with raping a teenager.
A grandson of the late Nelson Mandela has appeared in a South African court after being charged with rape and attempted rape of a 15-year-old girl.
Mbuso Mandela, 24, appeared briefly in Johannesburg Magistrate Court on Monday and remained in police custody until his bail hearing on Friday, according to The Guardian.
Mbuso, the grandson of Nelson and Winnie Mandela, is accused of attacking a teenager in a restaurant bathroom earlier this month.
Brigadier Mashadi Selepe, a police spokeswoman, insisted that Mbuso would be handled like any other citizen despite his family name.
He said: “All the rights of suspects are upheld during their investigation and lawful custody.”
Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader, died December 2013 at 95. South Africa’s first black president, was married three times and had 17 grandchildren.
But this is not his only grandchild who has been in trouble with the law.
His eldest grandson, Mandla, 41, was convicted earlier this year for assaulting a motorist during a road rage incident.
