Tearful Mom Is Convicted of Murdering Husband She Says Was Abusive
Julie Harper wiped away tears as a jury found her guilty of murdering her husband Jason.
Convicted murderer Julie Harper woke up in jail on Friday after spending her first night behind bars since she was convicted of her husband's murder.
Harper, 42, admitted to shooting her husband Jason, a popular math teacher, in 2012 but claimed she acted in self-defense after years of being raped and abused, some of which she recorded on her cellphone.
The mother-of-three cried after the guilty verdict was read on Thursday. She faces 40 years to life in prison when she is sentenced in November.
Two of her children, including her nine-year-old daughter, testified against her at the trial.
“How do you feel about your mother now?” the girl was asked about her mom in a San Diego court.
“I don't like her,” said the girl. When asked why, the girl replied: “Because she killed my father.”
After the verdict was read, Harper was put in handcuffs. She mouthed the words, "I love you," to her father, who was seated in the first row.
Following her conviction, prosecutor Keith Watanabe said: “The jury was able to see through Julie Harper’s lies."
Her defense attorney said: “I’m disappointed in the verdict, but I respect the jury’s decision.”
