Runner Who Vanished After Crossing NYC Marathon Finish Line Is Found

The search for a mentally disabled man who came to New York City to run in Sunday's marathon and then vanished has ended.

Gianclaudio Marengo, 30, who was visiting from Italy, had not been seen since he completed the world famous race in Central Park around 3 p.m., the NYPD said.

Monday morning, an off-duty officer on his way to work recognized Marengo on board a train at Penn Station.

Marengo had last been seen in his running gear, which included a turquoise shirt, black running shorts and a racing bib bearing the number 23781.

He was still wearing the clothes when he was located at 6:40 a.m. Monday morning. He'd been missing nearly 40 hours.

Police released a photo of Marengo in his running garb that was taken while he stood in what appears to be his motel room. Police said he was staying at the Sleep Inn Hotel in Long Island City, Queens.

Marengo, whose Facebook lists his hometown as Terni in central Italy, was accompanied to the U.S. by his running teammates. He speaks only Italian.

His disappearance was first reported by the teammates, who initially informed the Italian consulate. Consulate officials, in turn, alerted NYPD.
