The attacker was not identified. The severity of victims' injuries was not known. University officials revised the number of victims after first reporting five people were hurt.
Two are students, one is a female staff member and the other is a construction working doing a job on the Central Valley campus, the Sacramento Bee reported late Wednesday.
The suspect was shot to death by police shortly before 9 a.m.
The male student apparently pulled a knife in a classroom altercation, stabbed two of his fellow classmates and then attacked the construction worker, who came into the room because he could hear a disturbance, the paper reported.
The female staff member was stabbed as she sat on a bench, according to the Merced Sun-Star.
