A mother breastfeeding her infant was robbed at knifepoint by a man who shoved the woman to the ground before running off with her bag and cellphone.
A mother reportedly breastfeeding her infant was robbed at knifepoint by a man who shoved the woman to the ground before running off with her bag and cellphone in Manhattan, according to a police source.
Elena Sobina, 39, was in Fort Tryon Park near Riverside Drive about 5:30 p.m. Friday when a man holding a knife snatched her iPhone out of her hand and pushed her to ground, the source told INSIDE EDITION.
When he pushed Sobina, the fall also knocked her six-month-old daughter to the ground, the criminal complaint against the suspect said.
The man then approached Sobina and the baby while holding the knife, the complaint said.
“I was screaming ‘Please, please, take the bag with the money!’ The bag was hanging on the stroller, and I was crawling away from him with Kelly,” Sobina told the New York Daily News. “I thought he would kill me.”
The man grabbed Sobina’s bag from her baby stroller and ran off, the police source said.
Police canvassed the area and found Jose Garcia, 31, on Broadway and West 213rd Street, the police source said. Sobina's cellphone was hidden in his sock, the criminal complaint said.
He was charged with robbery, criminal possession of stolen, criminal possession of a knife, acting in a manner likely to cause injury to a child under 17 and criminal possession of a weapon, the source said.
Garcia had four prior arrests, including for possession of stolen property, trespassing and burglary, the source and reports said. He was arraigned on October 31, the District Attorney’s office said. His bail was set at $40,000 over $50,000 bond.
In a separate incident, police on Monday arrested three young men for attacking a man and stealing his money at knifepoint in Fort Tryon Park, officials said. One of the men arrested allegedly confessed to five other robberies at the park and one other at Isham Park since October 23, police said.
