He said he and his wife, Amanda, had a long-distance relationship before they married.
"I was at her hospital bedside and we were saying goodbye and I just told her. I told her that we knew how to do long distance 'cause we'd done it before and this wasn't something we couldn't overcome."
Speaking inside the South Carolina mega-church where the Blackburns worshipped after they were wed, the husband said "the hardest part for me, in this whole process, is thinking about him growing up without his mom," the pastor said of the couple's 15-month-old son.
Amanda Blackburn, 28, was shot in the head earlier this month while their boy was in another room. Blackburn said he was at the gym during the attack at their Indianapolis home.

Police are questioning three people in connection with the slaying. The pastor is not a suspect, investigators said.
"I don't even know if I can explain the gamut of emotions I feel on a daily basis," Blackburn said. "When I go to bed at night and when I wake up in the morning, I feel alone."
