Mother is Arrested After Baby Was Found Buried Alive Along LA River
Police last week arrested the mother of a little girl found beneath asphalt on a Compton, California bike trail.
A mother has been arrested in connection with the baby found buried alive last week beneath a Southern California bike path.
Porche Laronda Washington, 33, was arrested Thursday and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, KABC reports
Washington faces charges of attempted murder and child endangerment, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
"As a result of the multiple leads generated due to the public’s and media’s assistance in this case, Special Victims Bureau’s detectives were able to identify and arrest the mother," the sheriff's department said in a statement.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Bob Boese told the Associated Press on Sunday detectives identified and arrested the woman late last week.
The newborn was discovered by passersby Nov. 27 beneath asphalt and debris along the LA River in the southern Los Angeles County city.
Per an LASD statement: "As they searched, deputies heard a baby’s muffled cry and located a newborn baby girl buried alive under pieces of asphalt and rubble inside a crevice located along the bike path."
Deputies removed the rubble and pulled the baby out. Police say she was wrapped in what appeared to be a hospital blanket and cold to the touch.
The baby was around 24 to 36 hours old.
The girl was triaged at the scene and taken to the hospital for observation.
At the time she was abandoned, the baby was still within the age window for Safe Surrender, which allows a parent to leave a baby at any hospital or fire station in Los Angeles County, no questions asked.
