A 31-year-old woman has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after she allegedly tried to end her pregnancy using a coat hanger.
Anna Yocca, from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, alllegedly climbed into a warm bath and tried to abort the fetus, which was at 24 weeks gestation, the Daily News Journal reported.
But when she began bleeding, she called her boyfriend for help and he took her to hospital, according to police.
"The whole time she was concerned for her health, her safety and never gave any attention to the health and safety to the unborn child," Sergeant Kyle Evans told NewsChannel5.
Yocca was transfered to Saint Thomas Midtown in Nashville and doctors saved the child, who weighed 1.5 pounds.
“Although Saint Thomas Midtown was able to save 'Baby Yocca,' they indicated to me that his quality of life will be forever harmed,” Detective Tommy Roberts reported, according to the Daily News Journal.
Doctors reportedly said the child will need medical support for the rest of his life due to damage he sustained to his lungs, eyes and heart.
Yocca is being held in Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $200,000 bond and is due in court on December 21. It is not yet clear if she has an attorney.
Tennessee prohibits abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy, according to The Washington Post. If a woman wants an abortion, she must visit a clinic and receive state-directed counseling before waiting 48 hours to undergo the procedure.
