All 3 Calif. Fugitives Now in Custody One Week After Daring Escape
Jonathan Tieu, 20, and Hossein Nayeri, 37, were arrested in San Francisco, Orange Co. officials said Saturday.
All three California fugitives who made a daring escape from a maximum security facility over a week ago were back in custody Saturday.
"The entire state can breathe a sigh of relief," said Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens at a press conference held at noon Pacific in Santa Ana.
San Francisco Police officers were handling an unrelated call in the city when a citizen alerted them to the presence of a van in a Whole Foods parking lot.
As officers approached the van, the suspects fled, according to Hutchens. Following a brief foot chase, Jonathan Tieu, 20, and Hossein Nayeri, 37, were captured.
Hutchens said the fugitives stole the white van from the Los Angeles area and apparently drove north while also living out of the vehicle.
The third escapee, 43-year-old alleged killer Bac Duong, turned himself into authorities on Friday, police said.
The trio escaped the Orange County Central Men's Jail on Jan. 22. Authorities say they sawed through a metal grate to reach a plumbing tunnel and climbed to the roof.
They rappelled to the ground with knotted bedsheets, officials said.
On Thursday afternoon, an English teacher at the jail was arrested on suspicion of helping them escape.
Authorities say Nooshafarin Ravaghi, 44, may have allowed the trio to access Google Maps to help them escape.
Ravaghi began working at the jail six months ago as an English language teacher and Nayeri attended one of her classes, according to sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Hallock.
There was "some type of relationship that developed between the two," he said.
Hallock added that authorities could not rule out that Ravaghi had provided the tools the men used to cut their way out, although she denies it, he said.
