Female Guard at Rikers Island Charged With Raping Male Inmate, Contraband Smuggling
A female guard at New York's Rikers Island jail has been charged with raping a male inmate, authorities said.
A guard at New York's Rikers Island jail has been charged with rape and marijuana smuggling over her sexual relationship with an inmate, authorities said.
Nicole Bartley, 30 is a probationary employee who was hired in 2014, according to New York City's Department of Investigation.
She was arrested Saturday after a contraband-sniffing dog picked up a scent on Bartley as she reported to work at 5 a.m, the deparment said.
There were no drugs found on her person, but a search of her home uncovered about 70 grams of pot intended for delivery to a prisoner she was sexually involved with, officials said.
Under New York law, sex between an inmate and a guard cannot be considered consensual.
"This case involving sex for drugs puts on full display the dangers of corruption in our city’s jails," said DOI Commissioner Mark G. Peters. It also shows "the connection between the drugs, inappropriate relationships
and violence that pervade the system," he said.
The arrest marks 26th corrections officer busted since the department began investigating corruption at the facility in 20014.
Bartley has been charged with rape, sexual misconduct, official misconduct, promoting prison contraband and conspiracy, authorities said.
It was not clear if Bartley has been arraigned or if she has retained an attorney. She has been suspended from the department.
