Cops: Mother Arrested After Giving Birth in Subway Sandwich Shop, Leaving Newborn in Toilet
A homeless mother was arrested Monday after allegedly giving birth and abandoning baby in Subway sandwich shop toilet, police said.
A homeless woman was arrested Monday after she allegedly gave birth inside a Subway sandwich shop restroom and left her newborn in the toilet, police said.
Mary Grace Trinidad, a 38-year-old California transient, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the West Covina Police Department.
A customer at a Subway chain sandwich shop noticed a bleeding woman leaving the bathroom and went to investigate, police said.
Inside, a newborn boy was was found in the toilet, upright in the water, with his umbilical cord still attached. Employees called police.
The baby was fullterm and was crying, Cpl. Rudy Lopez told journalists outside the eatery, KTLA-TV reported.
The placenta was in a trash can, Lopez said.
About 20 minutes after the baby was discovered, police followed a blood trail and discovered Trinidad in an alley behind a Pep Boys auto parts store, Lopez said.
She was taken into custody and is currently hospitalized, police said.
The newborn is in critical condition at a nearby hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, police said.
