Former Miss New Jersey is in Critical Condition After Serious Car Crash
Cara McCollum, 24, was driving in Pittsgrove Township on Monday night when her convertible spun off the road and smashed into a tree, the AP reports.
A former Miss New Jersey is in critical condition after a car crash, police said Tuesday.
Cara McCollum was driving in Pittsgrove Township on Monday night when her convertible spun off the road and smashed into a tree, the AP reports.
McCollum struck two more trees before her car came to a halt.
Now 24, the Arkansas native won the 2013 Miss New Jersey pageant and went on to compete in 2014's Miss America pageant. The 2015 Princeton University graduate is now an anchor for the New Jersey TV news show "SNJ Today."
McCollum was wearing a seatbelt and was alone in the car, according to police. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m., New Jersey State Police said.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor and confirmed that 2014 Ford Mustang's air bags deployed.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation but police told the AP McCollum appeared to have been driving too fast for the wet conditions.
On Tuesday, McCollum successor, Cierra Kaler Jones, posted about the news on Facebook.
"Please keep my Miss New Jersey sister Cara McCollum & her family in your prayers. She was involved in an accident last night and is currently in critical condition," she wrote.
The Miss America organization also encouraged followers to pray for McCollum and tweeted: "Please join us in sending thoughts and prayers to Miss New Jersey 2013."
