Mother Left Screaming Daughter, 6, to Die in House Fire: Cops
A Miami mother stands accused of running away while her screaming young daughter was trapped inside their burning condo, police say.
Police in Florida say a mother fled her burning home while leaving behind her young daughter, who was screaming for help from a bedroom window.
Erica Rosello was arrested for child neglect with great bodily harm Thursday after police say her 6-year-old daughter had to be rescued from an apartment that caught fire in West Miami-Dade.
Police said neighbors told them Rosello, who was outside when the fire broke, made no attempt to save her daughter.
According to WSVN, Rosello was later arrested at the hospital where her daughter was being treated.
As Morello faces a bond hearing on Saturday, the Miami-Dade firefighter who saved her daughter from almost certain death is being hailed a hero.
Firefighter David Arencibia of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived some time before 8 p.m. Thursday and saw the girl in her bedroom as smoke poured out of the first floor unit.
"I just told my partner to get on one knee, used him as a prop, he helped me up and I climbed in through the window," Arencibia said. "It was picking her up, turning around and taking her out the window. I handed her over to my partner."
The girl was rushed to the hospital where she's being treated for smoke inhalation. She's expected to be okay.
However, firefighters believe it's unlikely the girl would have made it more than a few more minutes inside the buidling.
Once released from the hospital, the girl will be placed in the care of Department of Children and Families.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, authoriities believe it likely started inside the condo's kitchen.
