Body of Missing Toddler Pulled From Harbor As Police Charge Her Father With Murder
An Amber alert was issued for twenty-one-month-old Maddox Lawrence on Sunday, a day after her dad allegedly threatened to harm her.
A toddler's body was pulled from the icy waters of a New York State lake on Tuesday, days after an Amber alert was issued following her disappearance.
Twenty-one-month-old Maddox Lawrence disappeared with her father Sunday. The Amber alert said her father, Ryan Lawrence, had threatened to harm himself and possibly the child.
The 24-year-old father was arrested Monday afternoon. Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said at a press conference on Tuesday that Lawrence has been charged with his daughter's murder.
"This is a tough investigation for all involved," Chief Fowler said. "It's a special situation when talking about children. You're supposed to protect children."
According to police, Lawrence was arrested following a 911 call made by a community member. Police say he was found inside a store wearing a disguise at the time of his arrest.
Police have given no hints at what they believe motivated Lawrence to kill the girl.
A day later, divers searching Syracuse's Inner Harbor pulled out a yellow bag of what are believed to be Maddox's remains.
DNA testing will be done to ultimately be conclusive.
Meanwhile, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said that he will personally prosecute the homicide of baby Maddox.
Lawrence is charged with second degree murder. He is due to be arraigned Wednesday.
He faces 25 years to life behind bars if convicted.
