Teen Angry He Has to Get Up For School Shoots Grandmother, Two Children: Cops
The teen's family told police they were unaware the boy had a gun in the home.
A teenager angry that his family was making him get out of bed opened fire at his relatives, striking his grandmother and two children inside their East Nashville apartment, Metro police said.
The 16-year-old boy—who police have not identified—was sleeping when his mother and grandmother woke him, telling him he needed to get up and get ready for school around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, the women told officers.
“He made threatening statements before retrieving a handgun from a closet. He fired multiple shots inside the apartment,” police said in a statement.
His 67-year-old grandmother was struck at least twice, while his 12-year-old sister and six-year-old nephew were both grazed by gunfire, authorities said.
The teen also tried shooting his mother, but she managed to duck behind a couch and avoided being hit, police told reporters.
His two-year-old sister was also home at the time of the shooting but was not injured, officials said.
The teen fled the home after the shooting, tossing the gun at a nearby apartment as he ran, officials said.
Authorities said six nearby schools were placed on lockdown during the search for the teen, who police said they found a short time later near railroad tracks.
The boy, who attends Johnson Alternative Learning Center, refused to talk to Domestic Violence detectives, officials said. He was charged in Juvenile Court with four counts of attempted homicide and one count of reckless endangerment, authorities said.
The grandmother was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she is expected to recover. The two children are being treated at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
