Meet The Singing High School Janitor Who Brings Music to The Hallways
Roy Smith became an internet sensation after he performed with the school's orchestra.
A 62-year-old high school janitor is an Internet star after video of him belting out Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” with the school’s orchestra went viral.
Roy Smith believes in finding joy in his work, whether it’s mopping a floor or cleaning a bathroom, and he finds that by singing.
Students at Burke High School in Omaha, Nebraska, love Smith and often stop and speak with him in the halls. The orchestra director was so taken by Smith’s booming pipes, he invited him to sing with the group.
And Smith did, performing at a recent concert in a vibrant magenta suit and bringing down the house with Cooke’s epic lament on the Civil Rights movement.
A student posted video of the moving moments on Twitter, and then the clip was picked up on Reddit, where it quickly went viral.
“I’ve been singing ever since I was 13 years old,” Smith told InsideEdition.com. “I was the main attraction then.”
