Cops: Middle School Teacher in Newtown, Conn., Arrested for Carrying Gun On Campus
Science teacher takes concealed weapon to middle school, cops say.
A Connecticut science teacher has been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon on campus in Newtown, the same enclave where a gunman killed 20 first-graders in a 2012 mass shooting.
Jason Adams, 46, was taken into custody by police, who were called to the Newtown Middle School Wednesday after a fellow teacher reported he was carrying a concealed handgun, according to a statement from Chief James Viadero.
Adams, who has a state pistol permit, was charged with a felony count of possessing a weapon on school grounds.
He was detained by school security guards until police arrived. A phone message left by InsideEdition.com was not immediately
School officials said the instructor has been placed on leave pending an investigation. He was released without bail Wednesday and it was unclear if he had an attorney.
His first court appearance is scheduled for April 20.
In December 2012, a gunman stormed Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 20 children between the ages of six and seven. Six adult staff members were also killed.
Adam Lanza, 20, had shot and killed his mother, Nancy, at their home before heading to the school and opening fire, police said. He then took his own life.
"This matter is very serious and troubling, both the Newtown Public School system and the Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address the matter,” the school district said in a statement.
