Officer Charged For Allegedly Punching Handcuffed Suspect Who Was En Route to Hospital
Christopher Eisen II has been charged with felony battery in connection with an incident on April 5 during which police allege he punched David Martin.
A Florida police officer has been arrested after allegedly punching a handcuffed suspect who was being transported to a hospital.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement began investigating Melbourne Police Officer Christopher Eisen II earlier this month at the behest of his chief.
The investigation concluded that Eisen, 47, allegedly punched suspect David Martin repeatedly with a "closed fist" to the face.
A booking photo (pictured above) of the suspect dated the same day of the alleged assault appears to show abrasions to his face, but it was not clear from reports and investigators' statements whether they came from the alleged incident.
Melbourne Police Chief Steve Mimbs initiated the investigation into Eisen's conduct shortly after the alleged incident.
According to a release from the Melbourne police, Martin was extremely agitated while being transported to the hospital and continuously cursed and violently threatened Officer Eisen and his family. Martin also allegedly spit on Officer Eisen.
"Despite Martin’s aggressive and threatening behavior, each officer is expected to be courteous to the public and to maintain a professional demeanor," read the release. "Our supervisors uncovered this incident directly after it occurred and Chief Mimbs immediately requested assistance from FDLE to further investigate."
Chief Mimbs called his department "committed to protecting and faithfully serving the community."
“We absolutely will not tolerate these types of activities and will be thorough and relentless when allegations such as these arise,” the chief said.
Eisen turned himself into the Brevard County Jail Friday afternoon and was released on bond. He will be suspended wihout pay pending an internal review.
