An Iowa teacher who admitted to being drunk while chaperoning a high school prom has resigned.
Royce Van Roekel, a 33-year-old business teacher and cross country coach, was arrested at 10.30 p.m. on Saturday after Milford police received a call about an intoxicated teacher at the Okoboji High School prom.

Van Roekel allegedly failed a field sobriety test and his blood alcohol level was 0.191, which is more than twice the legal limit, KTIV reported.
He pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of public intoxication and was fined $225, according to court records.
On Tuesday, the Okoboji School Board held a meeting where board members accepted the teacher's resignation, Superintendent Gary Janssen confirmed to InsideEdition.com.
In a statement released after the teacher's resignation, Okoboji High School Principal Brian Downing said Van Roekel had arrived drunk to the dance. The teacher did not consume alcohol during the event, he said.
The incident was quickly reported and dealt with by school staff, he said.

"We regret that this situation occurred and are limited in the information we can share due to the fact that this is a private personnel issue that is being handled administratively according to school board policy and Iowa Code," the statement said.
Van Roekel's resignation is effective from June 1 but he has been suspended for the remainder of the school year. He is also required to pay a substitute teacher for the cost of finishing the school year, according to reports.
