Police Baffled by Mystery of Human Ashes Found in Ditch With American Flag

Cops in Florala, Alabama, are working to find out who's responsible for a box filled with human ashes found several weeks ago.
Cops in a small Alabama town are perplexed after a box filled with human ashes was found on the side of the road next to a framed American flag.
The discovery was made several weeks ago by utility workers off County Road 4 between Florala and Lockhart, near the state’s southern border with Florida, AL.com reported.
A bag containing the ashes was inside the small pine box, which was outfitted with a rusty lock.

Cops believe the wooden container, as well as its ashes, are more than a decade old at least.
"This box you can tell it was aged and worn," Florala Police Chief Sonny Bedsole told AL.com. "I wouldn't be surprised if it was 10 to 15 years old."
Tips have reportedly come in since news of the discovery became public, but nothing that has connected the remains to its proper owners.

Bedsole told AL.com that his officers are unsure how the ashes would have ended up in an area without houses nearby.
Anyone with information about the ashes is urged to call the Florala Police Department at 334-858-3245.
