Girl, 13, Tragically Killed in Freak Hammock Accident
Peri Sagun of Des Moines, Iowa, was having some fun with her sister when tragedy struck.
Some sisterly horseplay turned deadly for an Iowa girl last weekend when a freak hammock accident led to her death.
While enjoying their Saturday, Peri Sagun, 13, of Des Moines and her sister, Eren, set up a hammock by stringing it between a tree and a brick lightpost near their driveway.
While Eren was in the hammock, Peri ran to it and leapt inside with her, according to a Des Moines police report.
In an unthinkably devastating turn, the five-foot lightpost collapsed onto Peri's head.
Yelling desperately for help, Eren ran inside her home. Her father ran out to find Peri bleeding and not breathing, he told police.
Peri's father, Mustafa Sagun, attempted CPR before paramedics arrived to transport the unresponsive eighth grader to a hospital.
Just before 1 p.m., Peri was pronounced dead.
A touching obituary called the honor student "an amazing and beautiful best friend and little sister to Eren and an amazing role model and big sister to Devin."
"Peri, which means "fairy" in Turkish, was truly magical and exemplified the meaning of her name in many ways. She was lighthearted, care free, and her glowing personality could light up a room. She dreamed about sunshine, college, and a career as an interior designer," the obit read.
Services for Peri were scheduled for Thursday.
