"She was 79 years old and passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends after enduring a long illness,” Aniston said.
According to reports, Dow suffered a stroke in 2011 and a second stroke last year. Recent photos of Dow show her confined to a wheelchair.
Aniston had a complicated relationship with her mother and the two went many years without speaking. Her mother was not invited to the Along Came Polly star’s wedding to Justin Theroux last year.
The two had a falling out in 1999, after Aniston was said to be upset that her mom had talked about their relationship in her memoir, From Mother and Daughter to Friends.
But years of silence were broken in 2005 when Aniston turned to her mom for comfort during her divorce from Brad Pitt.

Just two weeks ago, the 47-year-old actress visited her ailing mother — it was their first meeting in five years.
Aniston reportedly wanted to see her mom one last time before she passed away.
Dow was married to Jack Melick from 1956 to 1961, and the couple had one child, John. She then married Aniston’s father, actor John Aniston, in 1965. They divorced in 1980.
