Golden Retriever Thrives After Being Found Abandoned on a Beach With 46-Pound Tumor
Before surgery, Henry the Golden Retriever walked with a wobble to balance the massive tumor jutting out the side of his body.
A Golden Retriever has started life anew after being found abandoned on a California beach with a 46-pound tumor weighing him down.
When Henry the Golden Retriever was found on the beach in Newport last month, animal control officers speculated the dog's massive tumor was the reason his previous owners deserted him, CBS Los Angeles reported.
He walked with a wobble, a video by CBS Los Angeles showed, and the tumor weighing more than half his body jutted out of the right side of his torso, taking up most of his body.
But the animal control officer that rescued the golden retriever said he continued to be as positive and loving as any other pup.
"The whole time, he's trying to give you kisses and wagging his tail," said animal control officer Valerie Schomburg to CBS Los Angeles, even though on-lookers often felt bad for Henry and his 46-pound tumor.
Schomburg took the rescue golden retriever to local veterinarian, Karla Nichols, who was shocked at the size of the tumor.
"It was very obvious that his right front leg was having a hard time supporting his weight so we knew we had to do something for him,” Nichols said.
She decided to do most of the procedures for free, and Schomburg was able to get a $500 grant to fund the rest of Henry's bills.
"There's places to get financial help to pay for treatment," Schomburg said, in a reminder to Henry's previous owners that money is no excuse to abandon a sick dog.
Five days after his tumor was removed, Henry could be seen in a video thriving. He now weighs only 78 pounds, and has a large bald patch where his tumor once was.
According to animal officials, when Henry fully recovers from his surgery in a few weeks, the Golden Retriever will be looking for a new loving home to take him in.
