Police in the U.K. have released surveillance video of the terrifying moment a 6-year-old boy was struck by an drunk driver who crashed through the walls of a convenience store.
“We have released this footage to reiterate the dangers of driving under the influence and the devastating impact it can have on other people. Please stick to none for the road if you’re driving. And if you’re having a drink, arrange alternative transport home,” Greater Manchester police said on their website.
It all took place in Landside Wine Stores in the English town of Leigh, as the boy was happily picking out candy with his parents close-by.
Footage vividly shows the woman smashing through the window of the store before striking the terrified child, who was knocked back into store shelves.
After the crash, the driver attempted to reverse, causing more damage to the shop and her red Ford Fiesta.
The boy was quickly rescued from the wreckage by his panicked parents. He luckily only suffered minor cuts and bruises, but was visibly shaken by the careless accident.
"This was a horrific ordeal for the young boy and his family. Thankfully he is alive and well but those terrifying moments will stay with his family forever," Sergeant John Brennan from GMP’s Road Policing Unit said.
Marion Smith, 79, has since pleaded guilty to failing to provide a sample of breath and driving without due care and attention.
She was given 50 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay costs a 170-pounds (about $242) fee at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court. She has also been banned from driving for three years.
Greater Manchester Police hope the video will help its jurisdiction by showing the consequences of drinking and driving.
“When you choose to drive a car after having a drink, you are also choosing to put other people at risk. This family popped to the shop to buy some sweets yet found themselves caught up in somebody else’s selfish decision to drive while drunk," police said.
