8-Year-Old Boy With Messy Room Killed by Mom's Fiance: Authorities
JonMarquis Stepich passed away three days after Orlando Williams allegedly threw him to the ground.
An 8-year-old Pennsylvania boy has died after his mom's fiancé allegedly threw him to the ground for not cleaning his room.
Orlando Williams, 38, was watching the boy, JonMarquis Stepich, as well as his own two sons Sunday night while his fiancée was at work, according to police in Allegheny County.
When Williams, who police say had been drinking alcohol earlier that day, went into the boy's room in the night, he tripped over a laundry basket and yelled at him to clean up his room, according to a criminal complaint cited by CBS affiliate KDKA.
He allegedly picked up JonMarquis, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, and tried to slam him into the middle of his bed, but he told police he missed and the child fell on the floor, unconscious.
When the boy's mother returned, they took JonMarquis to a hospital in the early hours of Monday morning, according to police. A few hours later, the child was airlifted to the Children's Hospital.
While in the hospital, staff allegedly noticed bruising and contacted police. JonMarquis had also suffered severe injuries, including a herniated brain stem, and needed a ventilator.
He passed away Thursday.
"May my beloved nephew rest in peace!" his uncle, Raymond Stepich, wrote on a Gofundme page for the boy. "He was removed from machines at 4:43 6/23/2016 today declaring him dead."
The family is now collecting funds for the boy's funeral.
"Never will forget this loving smile!" his uncle wrote.
Williams was taken to the county jail Monday night and remains there on $1 million bond on charges including aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Other charges have not been filed since the boy's death.
An attorney is not listed for Williams.
