Five Dead, Dozens Injured in Fiery Bus vs. Tractor Trailer Collision
A bus load of migrant workers traveling outside Tallahassee were involved in the dramatic collision Saturday morning.
Five people have been confirmed dead and dozens more suffered injuries after a bus in Florida collided with a tractor trailer on Saturday.
Authorities in Wakulla County say the bus, which was carrying 34 Haitian migrant workers, had failed to stop at a flashing red light when it hit the semi.
Both the bus, which still had dozens aboard, and the tractor trailer burst into flames after the impact, WTXL reports.
The Wakulla County Sheriff's office said 24 people were taken to an area hospital. The driver of the truck and four passengers were reportedly dead at the scene.
A passenger in the semi was reportedly uninjured.
Several other were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The bus was carrying the farm workers from Baninbridge, Georgia to Bell Glade, Florida for work when the accident occurred.
In a statement, Wakulla County Sheriff Charlie Creel said his "thoughts and prayers are with everybody who was affected by the terrible vehicle crash."
Creel said: "This is an absolute tragedy and I urge everyone to take a moment today to tell their loved ones how much they mean to them.
"I want to thank all of the first responders from not only the WCSO and the Wakulla County Fire Rescue but also the Tallahassee Fire Department, the Florida Highway Patrol and Tallahassee EMS. Thank you for a job well done under horrific circumstances."
Authorities continue working to identify the victims.
