Berkeley Student Who Went Missing in Nice Attack Is Confirmed Dead
The University confirmed the news Sunday night.
Authorities have confirmed that a missing 20-year-old UC Berkeley student was among the dead following Thursday’s horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France.
Nicolas Leslie who is from Del Mar, was in Nice along with 85 other Berkeley students for a program at the European Innovation Agency, a non-profit school specializing in entrepreneurship, and attended Thursday night's Bastille Day fireworks with friends.
The news of his death was confirmed by University Chancellor Nicholas Dirks, who said in a statement Sunday night: “This is tragic, devastating news. All of us in the UC Berkeley family — both here on campus, and around the world — are heartbroken to learn that another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence. I join Nick's parents, friends and the entire campus community in condemning this horrific attack, and in mourning the loss of one of our own."
Posters of Leslie were placed across the French Riviera promenade after authorities were alerted of his disappearance.
Three other Berkeley students were injured in the attack. Vladyslav Kostiuk, 23, a senior computer science major, suffered a broken leg.
Diane Huang, 20, a senior majoring in environmental economics and policy, sustained a broken foot. Both have since been released from hospital and are now back in their dorms in Nice, the university said Friday evening.
Sophomore Daryus Medora, 21, remains in hospital with a broken leg, according to the university.
On Saturday, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack that left over 80 people dead and more than 200 injured. The terrorist organization calling the killer, a 31-year-old Tunisian-born Frenchman, a "soldier."
