Why was Kennedys Miniseries Canceled?
The History Channel has canceled their controversial eight-part miniseries The Kennedys, allegedly after pressure from Caroline Kennedy and Mariah Shriver. INSIDE EDITION has the details.
Did Caroline Kennedy and her cousin Maria Shriver lean on The History Channel to kill the controversial miniseries The Kennedys?
That's the question swirling today after the bombshell decision by the network to pull the plug on the show.
The series, starring Katie Holmes as legendary First Lady Jackie Kennedy and Greg Kinnear as the President, has been slammed for being too racy and not historically accurate. It was due to air this spring on The History Channel.
The miniseries was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's first days in office.
But The History Channel now says, "History has decided not to air the eight-part miniseries...We have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand."
The Hollywood Reporter says that one executive "was personally lobbied by Caroline Kennedy" and that Maria Shriver "voiced her displeasure with the project."
The miniseries has been a high-profile project since it was announced a year ago, with many remarking on Katie Holmes's uncanny likeness to the First Lady of Camelot.
But a website called "Stop Kennedy Smears" specifically devoted to torpedoing the miniseries.
"They really criticized an early version of the script, they called it malicious, vindictive, they said that it really sort of tabloid-ized the Kennedy family," The Hollywood Reporter's Matthew Belloni told INSIDE EDITION.
According to the website, one version of the script featured a scene with JFK having sex in a swimming pool with his mistress.
After The History Channel pulled the show, the "Stop Kennedy Smears" website proclaimed:
"We won! [...] This is a great victory for the legacy of President Kennedy and for the entire Kennedy family."
