Police Officer Photographed Kneeling to Clean Homeless Man's Feet: 'You Just Feel Compassion'

It was an incredibly touching moment in Texas as a police officer got down on his knees to clean the feet of a homeless man during his shift.

Houston police Sergeant Stephen Wick is a part of the department's Homeless Outreach Team. He told InsideEdition.com that he has known the man, Quintus, for about a year through his work there.

Over their multiple encounters, Wick has learned that Quintus is 75 years old, sells newspapers and suffers from glaucoma, which has left him mostly blind.

Earlier this month, he and his partner, Officer Colin Mansfield, saw Quintus walking the streets and stopped to chat.

"He needed cleaning up really bad," Wick said, so the pair brought him to a safe area near the Homeless Outreach headquarters to help.

But when Quintus took his shoes off to get in the shower, Wick said he noticed the man was in pain as he walked.

"His toenails were so long they were cutting into his feet," Wick said. "You just feel compassion for the man, so you want to help him."

Wick said he was no stranger to cutting someone else's toenails, since his mom is elderly and has dementia, so he offered to do it for Quintus too.

Quintus, who had clippers in his bag already, was happy for the help, which was when his partner Mansfield snapped the picture that has since gone viral on the Houston Police Officers' Union Facebook.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be able to help somebody," Wick said. "This is pretty much what we do."

Afterwards, Wick said: "For 45 minutes, he sat in the shower. He was really enjoying it."

Since the incident, Wick said he and Mansfield have been working to help Quintus get off the streets.

The officers sent him off that day with clothes and an I.D. letter so he would have access to homeless shelters. He has also been able to visit a doctor.

Now, Wick said they have begun working with organizations for the homeless and the visually impaired. 

"Quintus is old and blind and he needs an advocate and that’s what we’re doing for him," Wick said. "We will work with him until we can get him off the street."
