Critically Endangered Gorilla Mom Cradles Her Baby Days After Giving Birth

There's nothing stronger than a mother's love.

15-year-old lowland gorilla Barika can be seen nursing her young in pictures posted to the Sedgwick County Zoo's Facebook page just days following her baby gorilla's birth.

The baby gorilla, who is still nameless with its gender not yet released, is the first gorilla to be born at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas.

The newborn's father, a 23-year-old silverback gorilla named Matt, looked on close by.

Officials reported the baby is "clinging well, and looks strong," although the entire family group—including Barika, Matt, and two other female gorillas—will remain under observation until staff are confident the baby is healthy and ready to be released into the world.

The new birth is a part of the zoo's initiative to regrow the critically endangered population.

According to a statement, the species has been diminished due to habitat destruction, big game hunting, and poaching.
