As Obamas Hit the Big Screen, Actors Open Up About Roles of Future President and First Lady
The film tells the story of a confident Barack Obama's pursuit of the woman then known as Michelle Robinson.
A new movie titled Southside With You, chronicles the courtship of Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson.
The future president is portrayed as a cocky 28-year-old intent on dating Michelle Robinson after they met at a Chicago law firm.
“Barack, you seem like a really sweet guy. But how many times do I have to tell you? We’re not going out together,” says Michelle, played by actress Tika Sumpter.
For Sumpter, who is now seven months pregnant, channeling the future first lady was somewhat intimidating.
“It was a little overwhelming,” said the actress. “I was like, ‘I’ve never been to Harvard! I’ve never been to Princeton!’
“But she’s a girl’s girl. And I felt like once I stripped down the Obama and went to Michelle Robinson, it was all good,” Sumpter said.
The film opens Friday.
