Uncle Arrested After Body of 10-Year-Old Girl Who Vanished From Church Is Found
The body of Kayla Gomez-Orozco was discovered in a well days after she was reported missing from her Texas church.
The body of a little girl who went missing from her Texas church last week has been found and police say a relative they've taken into custody is the only suspect in her death.
Kayla Gomez-Orozco vanished Tuesday, kicking off a manhunt that ended with the discovery of the 10-year-old's body in a well near the town of Bullard, according to authorities in Smith County.
The search led police to the home of Gustavo Zavala-Garcia on Saturday.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Zavala-Garcia is Kayla's uncle. Her body was found in a water well on private property near his home and also near the church where Kayla was last seen.
Police have not charged Zavala-Garcia in his niece's death. Instead, he's being held without bond on an immigration hold while authorities "develop and perfect a criminal investigation."
It was not clear Monday if Zavala-Garcia had an attorney.
His arrest comes after four days of searching for Kayla, who was last seen following a church service Tuesday.
An Amber Alert was issued in the region and a $60,000 reward was offered for her return.
In a Facebook post, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith applauded his staff's valiant effort to find Kayla. "Great teamwork. The only regret is that we were too late," he wrote.
