Elementary School Janitor Vacuums Designs Into Classroom Rugs: 'It's My Contribution to Education'
Ron Munsey, 60, started with simple lines and dots, and eventually worked up to vacuuming 5-minute masterpieces, including a witch to celebrate Halloween.
Although these New Hampshire elementary students may not be familiar with the new nighttime custodian at their school, they sure know his art.
Ron Munsey, 60, started working at the Peter Woodbury School in Bedford in September, and was immediately known for putting his own twist on what some would consider a mundane job.
"I figured it would be a relaxing job," Munsey told InsideEdition.com. "I was vacuuming one day, we got a couple new rugs, and I thought, 'You can do a lot with this.'"
The Red Sox fan said he was thinking about designs often mowed into the grass of his favorite baseball stadium when he decided to vacuum his own creation into the classroom rug.
"I call the rugs my miniature Fenway Park," he joked.
The most complicated design, Munsey said, was a dolphin he vacuumed into the rug. "My boss is a [Miami] Dolphins fan and I'm a [New England] Patriots fan, but you gotta keep on the good side of the boss," he joked.
While Munsey knows his creations are usually gone within an hour of school starting, his biggest reward is the students' appreciation for his work every morning.
"One of the teachers said all the kids come in every day, and they say, 'Wow, look at the rugs,'" Munsey said. "I met a parent yesterday and they actually said thank you. Her daughter talks about it every day when she comes home.
"Now I do something every day," he continued. "It's my little contribution to education. It makes [kids] look forward to coming to school."
