Would-Be Burglar Gets Firewood to the Face After Forcing Open Ex-Girlfriend's Door: Report

The only thing Matthew Lawrence Bergstedt, 27, got from his ex's house were lots of cuts, scrapes and two black eyes.
An accused would-be burglar emerged only with cuts, scrapes and two black eyes after he was bashed in the face with a piece of firewood by an occupant of the North Carolina home he was allegedly trying to break into, authorities said.
Matthew Lawrence Bergstedt, 27, forced his way into a former girlfriend’s North Raleigh apartment and was met by a 20-year-old man who was in the home when he kicked in the back door about 7 p.m. Monday, police told The News & Observer.

After he was hit with the wood, the Youngsville man ran to a nearby vacant apartment, which he also allegedly broke into, officials said.
Bergstedt was charged with misdemeanor counts of breaking and entering and attempted breaking and entering, according to online records with the Raleigh Wake City County Bureau of Identification.

In his mug shot, Bergstedt can barely open one very swollen eye, which is just as black and blue as the other, as well as a bloody nose and scraped-up cheek.
He was released from custody Tuesday after posting $3,000 bond, online records show.
