Love and Loss: The High-Profile Divorces and Star-Studded Connections of 2016

It was a wild year for marriages. Just ask Brangelina and Johnny Depp.

This year will be remembered as the end to one of the most glamorous couples in the world — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

In September, Jolie shocked the world when she filed for divorce from her Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star.

The breaking point reportedly came when their son, Maddox, stepped between his parents during a heated argument aboard their private charter plane.

"It would appear that that is the reason why Angelina felt compelled not simply to separate but to file for divorce and to request sole custody," People magazine executive editor Kate Coyne told Inside Edition.

The couple had only been married for two years but had been together since 2004.

Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp after just 15 months of marriage.

Heard was granted a temporary restraining order after she released photos of her bruised face from injuries she says were caused by Depp, which he denies. There was also a leaked video of Depp in which he appears to have some sort of meltdown inside their Los Angeles apartment.

The couple agreed to a nearly $7 million settlement. Half the money went to the American Civil Liberties Union for its violence against women campaign. The other half went to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where Heard has volunteered for the past 10 years.

Taylor Swift's long history of breakups got even longer in 2016 when she dumped Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and started dating British actor Tom Hiddleston right away, but that relationship only lasted a handful of months.

Love was also in the air in 2016.

Prince Harry and American television actress Megan Markle went public with their relationship. The pair met last summer in Toronto and had been secretly dating ever since.

Coyne said: "Harry has already introduced Megan to his father Prince Charles, and short of putting a ring on it, there is no more serious step you can take."

Funnyman Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish got married this year, as did Olympic hero Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson.

Eva Longoria and TV executive Jose Antonio Baston tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony in Mexico. The 80 wedding guests included singer Ricky Martin, Vanessa Williams, as well as David and Victoria Beckham.
