Watch the Terrifying Moment Fort Lauderdale Shooter Opened Fire Inside Airport Terminal
He has now been federally charged.
Heart-stopping video of the moment the deranged gunman opened fire at Florida's Fort Lauderdale Airport Friday has emerged.
In the footage obtained by TMZ, Esteban Santiago can be seen pulling the 9mm handgun out of his waistband and firing inside Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale Airport. Stunned passengers retrieving their bags can then be seen running for their lives.
Five people were killed, including a grandmother from Ohio, and 84-year-old Olga Woltering, who was about to embark on a cruise to celebrate her husband's 90th birthday.
Friday's shooting spree is now raising questions about what is seen as a lack of security at airport baggage claims around the nation.
More information has also come to light about Santiago. The Iraq war veteran was hospitalized for a few days in November after telling FBI agents he was hearing voices instructing him to watch ISIS videos. He reportedly created an identity, Aashiq Hammad.
In one photo he gave a one-finger salute, an ISIS signature.
Santiago's handgun was in his checked luggage, which is legal. Santiago retrieved the gun from his checked bag and went to the bathroom to load it before opening fire.
Santiago was federally charged Saturday with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death, which carries a maximum punishment of execution, as well as weapons charges. According to court documents, Santiago confessed to the FBI that he planned the attack.
