Former President George H.W. Bush Admitted to ICU With Pneumonia, Wife Also Hospitalized
The 41st president was hospitalized in Texas Tuesday. He is 92.
Former president George H.W. Bush has been taken to a hospital after falling ill this week. His wife and former first lady Barbara Bush has also been hospitalized "as a precaution."
The 92-year-old is being treated in Houston after complaining of shortness of breath at his home there, the Houston Chronicle reported early Wednesday.
Doctors say Bush is responding to treatment and should be discharged in the next couple of days.
The father of George W. Bush has been hospitalized on multiple occasions in recent years, at least one of which was for respiratory issues.
In late 2012, Bush was treated for a bronchitis-related cough, released, then re-admitted. He spent the next couple of months in intensive care before finally being released at the start of 2013.
Bush was hospitalized again in 2015 after he fractured his neck in a fall at the family's home in Maine.
Bush's chief of staff Jean Becker told reporters her boss is on the mend.
"He's there. He's fine and he's doing really well," Becker, said.
However, a subsequent release from the former president's office painted a grimmer picture.
"Shortly after our previous report on President Bush's condition, he was admitted to the ICU at Houston Methodist Hospital to address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia,'' the statement said.
While the statement said President Bush was resting comfortably following a procedure to clear his airways, it also said that his wife, Mrs. Barbara Bush, had been admitted to the same facility "as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing."
