Bariatric surgeon Dr. Bradley Schwack explained the procedure to Inside Edition.
"You take the stomach, which is actually about the size of a football, and you staple and remove 80 percent of the stomach," he said. "The new stomach is about the size of a banana."
The 33-year-old actress quietly went under the knife 10 months ago and won’t say how much she's lost so far.
She is detailing her struggle in a new memoir coming out in May called This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare.
Sidibe says one of the things that spurred her into action was being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes; she now says she loves her body.
