Patrick Swayze's Widow is Lone Juror to Vote in Favor of Killer Cop, Causing Mistrial
Lisa Niemi Swayze sat on a jury for the civil case against Michael Custer, who shot an unarmed man to death in 2012.
The widow of actor Patrick Swayze was the lone holdout in a civil suit over the police shooting of an unarmed, 24-year-old Florida man, according to a fellow panelist.
Lisa Niemi Swayze, 60, refused to join seven other jurors in ruling that West Palm Beach Sgt. Michael Custer used excessive force in the shooting death of Seth Adams in 2012.
“I personally got kind of angry,” panelist Thomas Goe told Inside Edition. “We weighed the evidence … We mapped it out on diagrams … But one person would not cooperate and did not seem to want to admit that the evidence contradicts the testimony” of Custer, he said.
Deliberations lasted three days, and grew heated at times, Goe said.
“It got loud,” Goe said. “That’s a nice way of putting it.”
Finally, jurors threw in the towel last week and announced they were hopelessly deadlocked in deciding whether Custer violated Adams' civil rights by using excessive or unreasonable force.
The federal lawsuit was filed by Adams' parents and sought up to $20 million in damages for the killing of their son, who was shot at the garden nursery where he worked and lived.
Custer, who was conducting surveillance in an unmarked sheriff’s car, said Adams attacked him as he sat parked outside the nursery. The State Attorney’s Office cleared him of any wrongdoing and Custer remains a deputy.
Lisa Swayze nursed her actor while he suffered from cancer. He died in 2009. She has since remarried and lives in Boca Raton.
