U.S. Capitol Police began shooting after one of their cruisers was rammed by a driver. The woman, who was not shot, was later taken into custody. Her identity was not immediately known.
Capitol Police spokeswoman Eva Malecki described the woman to The Associated Press as an "erratic and aggressive driver."
The incident, which happened at about 9:30 a.m., occurred near the U.S. Botanic Gardens. No one was struck by gunfire.
Streets near and around the Capitol were closed and the Botanic Gardens was placed on lockdown.
The incident comes just a week after a terrorist struck and killed pedestrians with a vehicle on Westminster Bridge in London.
Last year, a man who had previously described himself as a "Prophet of God" was shot after pointing a gun toward officers at a Capitol Police checkpoint.
That suspect, Larry Russell Dawson, was later charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees with a dangerous weapon and to failure to appear in court. He was known to police from a previous disruptive incident in the Capitol area. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Capitol Police said Wednesday's incident in Washington is not connected to terrorism.
