Crystal Fuentes was arrested Thursday after striking and killing the child in a crosswalk, officials allege.
A Southern California woman has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after cops say she fatally struck a toddler with her vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
According to the San Bernardino District Attorney, Crystal Fuentes was arrested Thursday after striking and killing 3-year-old Michael Flores as he crossed a street with his family.
Witnesses told police that several drivers were stopped before a crosswalk as the family passed on a flashing yellow light when 34-year-old Fuentes maneuvered her truck around the other vehicles.
One witness recalled seeing the truck's bumper strike Flores in the head while another estimated the vehicle was traveling at about 60 mph.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare, to lose a child,” District Attorney Mike Ramos said. “When I heard about the deadly crash that took the life of 3-year-old Michael Flores, my heart broke for him and his family.”
Fuentes has at least one prior DUI conviction and was allegedly driving on a suspended license, according to the DA.
Fuentes has been charged with one count of murder, one count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, one count of driving while under the influence of alcohol – prior convictions, one count of driving with a .08% blood alcohol content – prior convictions and one count of driving when privilege suspended for prior DUI conviction.
