'James Bond' Actor Roger Moore Dies of Cancer at 89

Sir Roger Moore, who starred as James Bond in seven films of the iconic spy franchise, has died. He was 89.

Moore, who appeared in nearly 100 movies over the course of more than seven decades, died Tuesday after a short battle with cancer, according to reports.

He was survived by his wife, Kristina Tholstrup, and his three children.

Moore was the third actor and the first Englishman to play the suave secret agent, taking over from Sean Connery with 1973’s Live and Let Die. He and Connery are tied for the most 007 roles.

Following Live and Let Die, Moore starred as the danger-loving MI6 agent in The Man With the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy.

His final Bond film was 1985's A View to a Kill, after which he was replaced by Timothy Dalton.

Before Bond, Moore starred as Simon Templar in British TV’s spy thriller, The Saint, for seven years, among dozens of other film credits.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, and honored with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2008.

Off screen, Moore was known for his tireless charity work, and was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991.
