Despite the mother's anguish, police say they plan to charge her with felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
"She kept saying, 'It is my fault and they are going to take everything away from me,'" a neighbor told KKTV.
The child was rushed to the hospital, and underwent surgery Sunday.
Thankfully, doctors say the boy will likely be okay.
According to his much older sister, the boy and his brother "wanted to play 'cops and robbers.'"
"My heart dropped — I was so scared," the sister said. "I don't know where he was shot, if he was going to live, how I was going to get to the hospital. But when I got here, I heard what happened. The doctors and nurses talked to us and I heard he was going to be OK."
Police have not confirmed the sister's account, but they do believe the shooting was accidental.
Abeta has been released on bond.
