Registered Sex Offenders, Including Sexual Predators, Listing Walmart as Home Address

More than a dozen registered sex offenders, including several designated sexual predators, have listed a Florida Walmart as their home address, a move officials said is completely legal but has left shoppers and residents stunned.

Fifteen men and two women required by law to register as sex offenders listed their place of residence at or near 2700 Clearlake Rd., a Walmart Supercenter that is open 24 hours a day, according to the Florida Sex Offender Registry.

All are designated as transients and many are believed to live across the street in a homeless camp set up in nearby woods, police told WFTV.

State law allows homeless sex offenders to use the address of the closest physical address on the registry.

But locals were shocked to learn that such a practice was allowed

“What’s the point of having a registry if they don’t have to actually live at the address they’ve provided?” one person wrote online.

Of the registered sex offenders listed as living at the Walmart, several are labeled as sexual predators, or someone convicted of a sexually violent offense.

Officials at Walmart told WFTV that they were unaware sex offenders were using the store’s location as their home address, but said safety is their top priority.

"We work to maintain a safe environment for our customers and associates," Walmart said in a statement. "It’s disturbing to learn that convicted felons would list our store as their residential address. We condemn such a practice and must refer any other questions to local law enforcement."
