Police Bodycam Footage From Fatal Car Crash Shows Officer Speaking to Venus Williams After Car Accident
The tennis star has remained tight-lipped about the accident, as the family of the deceased victim has filed a wrongful death suit.
Police bodycam footage shows police attempting to determine who is at fault moments after a car crash involving Venus Williams that resulted in the death of an elderly man last month.
The video shows the officers telling the tennis superstar she was "at fault" in the accident.
“He had a green light. So you kinda violated his right of way,” the officer can be heard telling Williams in the video.
Police later changed their position after investigating further, saying Williams had entered the intersection lawfully. She has been cleared of wrongdoing.
The tragic accident happened in June near Williams' gated home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., as she tried to cross a six-lane highway in her Toyota SUV.
Heavy traffic forced her to stop in the middle of the intersection.
When she drove forward, her light had turned red and she struck an oncoming car. The collision killed 78-year-old Jerome Barson and injured his wife, Linda.
Williams was asked about the accident while competing at the Wimbledon tennis tournament last month in England.
"There's no words to describe,” she said while fighting back tears. “I'm speechless.”
The Barson family has reportedly filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams.
Through her attorneys, Williams has denied she was responsible for the accident.
