Disney Unveils Lighthouse Sculpture to Honor 2-Year-Old Boy Killed by Alligator

Lane Graves was killed at the resort more than a year ago.

Disney World has unveiled a lighthouse statue dedicated to the memory of the 2-year-old boy who was killed by an alligator while playing at one of its resorts more than a year ago.

Lane Graves was killed at the park in June 2016 when an alligator dragged him into a Seven Seas Lagoon.

“In recognition of National Lighthouse Day, please see the lighthouse created to honor our loving boy Lane,” the Lane Thomas Foundation posted to their Facebook page on Monday.

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa initially announced they were planning to build the statue in June, and now the blue and gold light house stands near the location of the tragedy.

"The lighthouse sculpture has been installed to help spread awareness of the Lane Thomas Foundation, which was established to provide assistance and support to families whose children need organ transplants," Walt Disney World said in a statement.

Lane was playing in six to 12 inches of water when the alligator, which was between four and seven feet long, reportedly attacked him and dragged him into the lagoon.

The boy’s dad, Matt Graves, jumped in to rescue his son, to no avail.

Lane’s body was found “intact” 16 hours later.

The water line had “no swimming signs,” but there were no signs warning of alligators in the water.

In the year since Lane was killed, Disney has put up signs warning of reptiles in its waterways, as well as ropes, and built a boulder wall along the edge of the lagoon.
