Former Coach Convicted of Having Sex With Student Apparently Commits Suicide: Police
Timothy Even, 28, was found dead in his car by Maine State Police.
A former high school track coach who was convicted of having sex with a female student has apparently committed suicide, authorities said.
Timothy Even, 28, was found dead in his car Friday on an outdoor storage area for logs, Maine State police said.
“His death is not suspicious and is believed to be a suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning,” said Lt. Walter Grzyb.
A state coroner will make a final determination, he said.
Even was convicted in December on misdemeanor counts of assault and unlawful sexual contact, according to the Portland Press Herald.
After initially denying he was having an affair with a student, Even acknowledged he was having sex with a 17-year-old high schooler, authorities said.
His admission came after detectives showed him copies of sexually explicit texts between the two, police said.
A friend of the girl saw the messages and informed authorities, as did the girl’s parents, according to investigators. The relationship began in 2016 and ended with Even’s arrest in September.
“This is a situation that started with the best of intentions,” Even wrote in an affidavit released in September. “Unfortunately, my lack of professionalism and self-control created a situation that got out of hand.”
The age of consent in Maine is 16, though teachers and school employee cannot have sexual relationships with students under their supervision.
After his arrest, Even was placed on leave from his position as track coach.
