Dad Commits Suicide Moments After 2-Year-Old Finds Gun, Accidentally Kills Himself
Kyree Myers and his father, Keon Myers, died Wednesday.
One tragedy led immediately to another in a South Carolina home this week when cops say a toddler's accidental death drove his stricken father to, in turn, kill himself.
Columbia police believe 2-year-old Kyree Myers found a loaded gun in his house on Wednesday before inadvertently shooting himself in the head.
His mother, who was home at the time, called 911 to report the incident.
When officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Keon Myers threatening to harm himself after the child’s severe injury, according to a police statement.
Officers say they made several repeated commands for Myers to drop the weapon.
Mr. Keon was found at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, also to the head.
EMS transported both shooting victims to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.
"Our hearts are heavy at the tremendous loss of life. We have victim advocates assigned to the case to assist the family during this difficult time. This experience has also been emotionally trying for responding officers. They will participate in a debriefing to discuss the incident and receive further support as needed," Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said in a statement.
A GoFundMe page has been created to support the family.
"Tragedy has struck the Myers family as you all may know.. This was unexpected and has left a huge burden on them. No donation is too big or too small... Let's continue to uplift them in our prayers... Thank you so much for your donation," the page reads.
Donations to the family can be made here.
