The mystery man is Matthew Cobos, and he actually covered the woman’s eyes so she wouldn't see the carnage around them.
Cobos is a cavalry scout with the U.S. Army, based in Hawaii. He was in California visiting family before heading to the festival.

The image of him shielding the unnamed woman quickly made the rounds on social media, with many calling it "iconic" in the aftermath of the shooting.
According to reports, Cobos is believed to be back with his family in California.
