After Yanking Invite to Philadelphia Eagles, Trump Seems to Forget Words to 'God Bless America'
President Trump uninvited Super Bowl champs the Philadelphia Eagles, then seemed to forget words to 'God Bless America'
President Trump seemed to not know the words to "God Bless America," as he sang Tuesday at the White House after rescinding his victory ceremony invitation to Super Bowl champs the Philadelphia Eagles.
Instead, Trump held a "Celebration of the American Flag," after reneging on his offer to the Eagles on Monday night over a disagreement about standing for the national anthem before games.
The president did not mention the team during Tuesday's ceremony, though at least two people took a knee during the event.
Then, as the crowd and a military choir sang "God Bless America," Trump appeared to not know the words, stopping and starting and sometimes not singing at all.
That prompted some online ribbing.
"We stand to show love for our fellow citizens and our magnificent Constitution. We stand to pay tribute to the incredible Americans who came before us and the heroic sacrifices they made," Mr. Trump said. "America is a great nation, a community, a family. And America's our home and we love our home, and our country has never done better than it's doing right now. Never!"
Tuesday wasn't the first time the president appeared to forget patriotic lyrics.
In January, at the height of his anger at professional football players who took a knee during the anthem to protest police violence against African-Americans, Trump didn't seem to know the words to the national anthem.
